In the USA, investigations into the use of magnetic tape for video recording were made by Bing Crosby Laboratories and RCA. Up until the mid-fifties all television programmes were broadcast ‘live’ or were taken from cinema film. Although ‘video’ is less durable than film, it’s easier to handle and is convenient for electronic editing. Unlike traditional film, where the images are kept in optical form, a video recording retains the information in a specified video format. Some other people may have some better suggestions on all this, I haven't had my hands on a lot of different devices along these lines.A video recording device allows moving pictures to be stored on a suitable recording medium, such as a video tape, video cassette or hard disk. I know it's a hassle to use a computer to do your capturing, but maybe for your workflow a capture device with analog inputs that can upscale/convert natively to the same format your camera uses (AVCHD) would be the most useful thing. I wonder if the Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle can run standalone? I am guessing probably not.

That way you've got a really solid, pro frontend for your analogue to DV conversion.

So I suppose one option would be to get a DVR recorder with a firewire input, and an ADVC-300 (or similar ADVC-series device). My Canopus ADVC-300 is bi-directional, with both firewire I/O and analog I/O, and runs completely standalone from the computer.

There are tons of cheap models meant for recording composite video from security cameras, and a lot of them do full resolution video - but will the analog to digital conversion be as good as using a more pro device intended for production? I'm not sure. The question I suppose is what is a good model that's designed for doing a really solid capture from analogue source at the same time. It seems like a DVR is definitely what you want.

I'm confused, and don't want to buy the wrong thing, this hd video stuff is new to me. to get your recorded LZX video synthesis files into Final cut Same with the Matrox stuff, looks like what I need but I'm not sure if any of their models will work as a capture device until I'm ready to put everything in Final Cut.ĭoes a tapeless vtr or a dvr with all the needed analog jacks and firewire or usb 2.0 etc. The black magic designs intensity shuttle has caught my eye but I don't think it works as a dvr.

So when I have something I want to record I can quickly record it. My question: Is there a tapeless capture device that I could set on my video monitor hooked up to it and away from my computer that I can use as a deck to store my video synth stuff I make on until I transfer it to my computer? I like to have a recording device hooked up to my LZX system

It uses the avchd codec, not ideal but hard to find cameras that don't use it that are affordable. I've found the camera of my dreams, just can't find one to buy yet.

Plus I like the idea of a tapeless set up now that I think about it. Well i've been forced to go hd since getting my camera fixed is as much as buying another one. I broke my dv camera last week, I had a great dv set up put together with a nice deck that worked for me. I got one lady to understand what i want (I think) but she didn't know if such a thing exists. Needless to say the idea of an analog modular video synth was never understood by this store One place just keeps saying that digital is how everyone uses video now, analog video is dead. My local pro video store can't wrap their heads around why I need analog video inputs on a tapeless capture/record device.
